If you are in the market for a new PC or laptop, look no further, RJTaylor Enterprises is here to help confuse the issue even further. (grin)

Like finding a great automobile mechanic, I have located a superb computer expert here in the Valley that I have grown to trust over the years.

Having a PC built to your specifications, is far better than buying a pre-fabricated system. Purchasing a system designed and serviced by the local manufacturer also helps create an environment for superior customer service and minimum down time.

I have also arranged a special "2-year warranty" for my clients, instead of the more typical 90-days or 1-year limits found elsewhere.

In a nutshell ... the overall Pros and Cons boil down to this, in my opinion  ...

A proprietary computer system ... can only be serviced using manufacturer parts, and in some cases, only at authorized service centers. These systems are marketed in price ranges that offer a lot of software, but very little computing power for the buck. The general public is only exposed to these types of "off the rack" PC systems at their local retailers, and therefore must rely on the salesperson to make an informed buying decision. (doh!)

A custom-built computer ... is a different type of animal altogether. It can be extremely powerful, but usually has very little software at first. Also, these modular designed systems can be serviced by any qualified repair facility and in some cases, by the owner themselves. Parts can be replaced or upgraded easily without needing to special order dealer parts found in many computer systems, that I won't mention by brand name.

Another difference is ... I will only sell you what you need ... others will only sell you what they have in stock. Don't pay someone for pre-installed software or hardware that you may never need or use. Save the money to only buy the software and hardware you really do want on your new computer, which should be uniquely your own design and NOT come pre-configured.

The Bottom Line: Visit your local computer dealers to help determine in your mind's eye, what type of computer you are looking to buy and why. Write down the specifications of the computer system you are interested in, then call me for a second opinion. Following this simple procedure will help prevent "spontaneous buyer's remorse" that I see and hear about so often.
